Next New

I like to think that we are at a stage where we no longer need any more "new media". Ideally I think reverting back to older methods of gathering information and connecting with other people would be better than new forms of media that have the same end goal. We already have online therapists and doctors that will make a house call from a text message. There is no longer any surprise when going to a restaurant because you have already seen pictures of every item on the menu on google maps, yelp, instagram, etc. One idea I had recently was to change what we see on our facebook newsfeeds. We all know that our facebook newsfeeds are catered to our interests, political opinions, careers and searches. I think it would be interesting if there was a feature that allowed you to see what other facebook users newsfeeds looked like. You could have a better understanding of what other people are exposed to day to day and perhaps understand why someone has developed such strongly different opinions from your own.

  1. Hi Gabrielle,

I completely agree with you that there is an overwhelming amount of new media being released is the past few years. It would be a great idea to have a pause in new platforms and instead revert to some old media or improve current new media. Like you mentioned, I didn't even notice how much I rely on new media for my everyday life decisions. Whenever I go eat somewhere now I would definitely go on yelp.com or foursquare.com to look at the reviews and pictures first. I would read what other people like most and what the restaurant's house special dish is. I feel like by doing this I remove the surprise factor in trying somewhere new. Also, instead of the waiters taking responsibility of suggesting what I would like or should order I have heavily relied on what other "yelpers" would recommend. I also think that your Facebook newsfeed idea is brilliant. If we were able to see what other Facebook user’s newsfeed looks like, then we may understand what they like/ dislike more. However, this may be a privacy concern for many users and I feel like many people would be against the idea of having other people look into their “life”.

  2. Hi Gabrielle,

I really enjoyed this blog post and can heavily relate to it. Often times I catch myself spending hours on my phone and laptop browsing through new media sites and I force myself to go out and socialize with the real world or read a book. There are certain things that I wish would go back to old times but I guess I just have to learn to adapt to the change in culture.

  3. Hey Gabrielle- There really is no surprise to what we're exposed to nowadays, which I guess can be a good thing and a bad thing. Good, in a sense that we'll know what we're getting ourselves in to, but bad in a sense that people won't be excited about an event or place anymore. I think your idea would be interesting.. although it can potentially be a breach of privacy, no? In general, I think it's something a curious mind would want to know, but everyone is curious so this would be something that turns heads.
